Torch Ginger by artist Tip Freeman - 20" tall by 15" wide.
This original Offset Lithograph was printed circa 1943.
Torch ginger (Etlingera elatior) is a tropical plant known for its stunning and distinctive inflorescence. Native to Southeast Asia, it belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The plant produces tall, sturdy stems with lance-shaped leaves, and its most notable feature is the flower spike that emerges from the tip. The torch ginger flower consists of vibrant, cone-like bracts that can vary in color, including shades of pink and red. Contrary to its appearance, the true flowers are small and concealed within the bracts. Torch ginger is not only valued for its ornamental beauty but is also utilized in culinary traditions in some regions, where the young shoots and flower buds are used in various dishes. Additionally, the plant has cultural significance in Southeast Asian countries and is often featured in traditional rituals and ceremonies.
